Since 2 June 1946 the territory of Seborga has been one of the municipalities of the Italian Republic, administered by a mayor elected from among the citizens and residents known as Seborghini.
In the 1990s some of them, led by the Seborghino flower grower Giorgio Carbone, improperly elected their own prince of Seborga, named Giorgio I, in order to restore the independence of Seborga.
That vote was organised without detailed historical and legal knowledge.
On the death of Giorgio Carbone the people of Seborga elected Marcello Menegatto, who was succeeded, after his resignation, by his former wife Nina Dobler.
These elections, which have no historical, legal or religious basis, are regarded by the Italian authorities as student-like and purely folkloric in character.
In reality they brought attention back to the small Ligurian village, which has become a destination for many tourists.
In order to shed light on the many extravagant ideas of reconstituting the former Principality of Sabourg, without title or historical and legal basis, it was thought appropriate to draw up a historical and legal report, supported by official sources, texts and online publications.

On 29 September 2019 it was decided to restore the ancient Benedictine and Cistercian matrix organisation at Seborga by creating the Monastic Order of Seborga, a primary, secondary and tertiary religious congregation, incardinated in the Monegasque religious body known as the Polish National Catholic Church in Monaco, together with other Orthodox ecclesiastical jurisdictions, in a full ecumenical spirit, in order to revive the former Abbatial Principality of Seborga.
On 28 December 2019 His Most Reverend Highness Monsignor Giovanni Luca was crowned Prince-Abbot of Seborga, Commendatory Abbot of the Monastic Order.
The main aim of this historic event was to have the first monastic state of humankind recognised in the appropriate forums — a state today without territorial possession, claiming autonomy within the Italian Republic in order to promote the economic and social development of Seborga and the territories concerned.
